If you’re not yet convinced of the importance of social media, the latest numbers from research firm Hitwise might convince you otherwise
. Last week Facebook’s homepage recorded 7.07 percent of all internet traffic, .04 percent more hits than Google received. The margin of difference may be a small one, but it’s not insignificant. The weekly figures are indicative of the shift in internet usage that’s taken place since the emergence of social media sites. People are less interested in surfing the web and more interested in connecting with other people.
Since it’s clear that social networking sites are no longer being used for purely recreational purposes, it’s important that people and businesses make important information easily available to other social media users. Making sure that your website is easily found through Google and other search engines (do people even use other search engines?) is important, but it’s equally if not more important that your Facebook and Twitter pages are easily found. It’s pretty easy to do that on Facebook. All you need to do is create a page or fan page with your name or your company’s name. Twitter handles that are some combination of your name, your name and your company’s name, or your name and industry make it easier for people know you to find and follow you.
